The Historical Geographies of Lisa See’s The Island of Sea Women Online

Dr. Patrick Chung, Assistant Professor of History, explores the historical places and events that serve as the backdrop of Lisa See’s The Island of Sea Women. It will provide a brief overview of 20th-century Korean history, with particular focus on the Japanese colonization of Korea (1910-1945), the Jeju Uprising (1948-1949), and the Korean War (1950-1953). In doing so, it will highlight the centrality of war and memory in See’s work and, more broadly, modern Korean society.
Registration closes 24 hours before the event begins.
